The BREATHE Center, formed in the 1990s, is made up of a team of scientists, physicians, and community members dedicated to improving the health and lives of those living with respiratory diseases. One of our main areas of focus is finding ways to improve the health of patients living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To do this, we partner with patients, communities, and other universities across the nation to define risk factors for worse lung health, including but not limited to air pollution, poor diet, inactivity, barriers to adherence to medication, tobacco use and health disparities. As we discover factors that contribute to health outcomes, we test strategies to change the course of disease, and share this information with clinicians and policy-makers to improve local and national health.
We are grateful to our participants who make this progress possible.

This research study is a multi-center randomized clinical trial to look at COPD and indoor air quality. It is being done to see whether air cleaners can improve the air quality and health of former smokers with COPD. The study lasts for 12 months. Participants will be asked to complete an in-person clinic screening, 1 phone call to complete the enrollment, 1 phone call after to deliver the air cleaners directly to the participant's home, 4 follow-up calls, and 3 remote environmental home assessments (1 week).
Participants could receive up to $580 and keep the air cleaners.

This study looks at COPD and diet, by assessing the effect of a food-based dietary intervention aimed at increasing omega-3 intake and indoor air quality. The study hopes to learn how these factors affect the symptoms of COPD.
Participants will be asked to complete an in-person clinic screening visit, 3 additional clinic visits, and 3 home visits, plus monthly phone calls. Participants receive a weekly $50 food voucher and home delivery for 12 weeks. The study lasts for 6 months.
Participants could receive up to $880 during the study.
