The BREATHE center has been a leader in assessing the in-home contributions to air pollution and other environmental exposures, like allergens and microbes, and their impact on asthma and COPD. We monitor for fine and coarse particulate matter, secondhand smoke, NO2, and other pollutants and relate those exposures with worsened health. Through this research we have shown that indoor concentrations of air pollution often exceed outdoor concentrations, and considering many people spend 90% or more of their time indoors, understanding the contribution of the indoor environment is crucial for understanding the impacts of the environment on susceptible individuals. Our research also seeks to use novel sampling approaches including personal sampling using equipment contained in backpacks and low-cost sensors to better capture exposures over long durations of time.
